It was 4 am on January 9th, as David Daniels and I loaded his trailer with the four wheelers for our big hunting trip to Emelle, Alabama. As we jumped into his F-250 complaining about the piercing 32-degree temperature, we knew Emelle was going to be much colder as Mike Mahoney had already text messaged that it was in the teens. We love cold weather when hunting, but this was just a bit too cold…by about twenty degrees! It was the worst cold blast we have seen since the 1980’s. So much for “Global Warming”!

This trip was my second with Mike Mahoney this year. My first trip to Georgia was back in October where I saw many 4 pointers and spikes; however, I did not get a chance to shoot my first big buck. January 2010-Great Month for Yellowmouths. One of thebest things about living in Florida is that I can fish in nice weather, twelve months of the year. Whileanglers up north are huddled around a kerosene heater, ice fishing, we Floridians are out getting some sun and catching big fish. One species in particular, the Spotted Sea Trout uses January’s cold fronts to invade the shallows and feed voraciously.

Officially a member of the drum family, Sea Trout look like a combination of a freshwater pickerel and two trout, the rainbow and the brown. Sea Trout are long and skinny and have huge, canine teeth. They have a beautiful rainbow silver color with lots of black spots, like the brown trout. Bigger trout or “Gators” develop a mustard yellow inner mouth when they get longer than 20 inches or so. Although unlikely that you can match the state record of a 15 pound 6 ounce fish, catching any trout over 4 pounds on light tackle is great fun. read full story . . .
